Is Beaulieu the Nicest Village in England? We Think So (and We’ve Got Receipts)

Posted by Beaulieu Village Hall · 17 May 2026
Let’s settle this once and for all.
Every year, the same villages get wheeled out in the “prettiest in England” debates — the Cotswolds crowd, the picture-postcard suspects, the ones that look like they were designed by a film set director. Castle Combe. Bibury. Bourton-on-the-Water. Lacock. Rye.
And every year, Beaulieu sits quietly in the New Forest, unbothered, with wild ponies ambling down the high street and a river so serene it makes you want to cancel all your plans.
So we’re making the case. Properly. With actual receipts.
🏆 What the Experts Say (Spoiler: They Love Us)
We didn’t just make this up. Here’s what some very well-respected voices have said about our little corner of Hampshire:
Condé Nast Traveller named Beaulieu in their 20 Most Beautiful Villages in the UK and Ireland, writing:
“Forget getting anywhere in a hurry in this Hampshire village at the head of the Beaulieu River, where New Forest ponies and donkeys amble down the high street on the hunt for open heathland.”
Ponies. On the high street. Name another village where that’s a Tuesday.
The Daily Telegraph called Beaulieu one of the poshest places in the country (using data from Savills), describing it as “chocolate-box pretty with a period high street boasting artisan stores while being on the doorstep of both the New Forest and Buckler’s Hard.”
Chocolate-box pretty and on the doorstep of a National Park? Yes please.
FBM Holidays ran a public poll in 2021 and Beaulieu was voted the 3rd prettiest village in the entire UK. Third. In the whole country.
And New Forest Living puts it beautifully: “Beaulieu, meaning ‘beautiful place’ in French, is an idyllic ancient honey stone village standing at the tidal limit of the Beaulieu River and remains largely unspoilt.”
Largely unspoilt. In 2026. That’s practically a miracle.
🎸 Oh, and Rod Stewart Met Maggie May Here
Yes, really.
At a talk by Ken Robinson of the Beaulieu History Society (held, naturally, at Beaulieu Village Hall), we were told that a very young Rod Stewart allegedly met Maggie May right here in Beaulieu village — while attending the legendary Beaulieu Jazz Festival.
The Jazz Festival got so famous and popular that it eventually outgrew the space (now occupied by the National Motor Museum) and things got, shall we say, lively. It paved the way for Knebworth and the Capital Radio Jazz Festival.
So next time someone questions whether Beaulieu has cultural clout, just say two words: Maggie May.
🏛️ More History Than You Can Shake a Stick At
Beaulieu has been turning heads since the 13th century. The village was built around an Abbey founded in 1204 by Cistercian monks on land given by King John. Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries in the 1530s, and Beaulieu passed to the ancestors of the present Montagu family — who still call Palace House home today.
Over 800 years of history, one family, and the same stunning village. That’s not just heritage. That’s staying power.
🚗 Yes, There Are Museums (Three of Them, Actually)
Most people come to Beaulieu for the National Motor Museum — 285+ vehicles telling the full story of motoring. And it’s brilliant. But here’s what visitors often miss: there are actually three world-class attractions on the estate:
- The National Motor Museum — cars, cars, and more cars
- Palace House — the ancestral home of the Montagu family since 1538
- Buckler’s Hard — a former shipbuilding village where much of Nelson’s historic fleet was built, complete with a gorgeous little chapel and a two-mile riverside walk
Allow a full day. Seriously.

🌿 But There’s So Much More Than the Museums
This is the bit TripAdvisor doesn’t tell you.
Beaulieu Village High Street has independent gift shops, cosy cafes, a Garden Centre, and an ancient primary school that looks like it belongs in a storybook. The riverside walk to Buckler’s Hard is two miles of pure Hampshire bliss — keep your eyes peeled for kingfishers.
Just across the Beaulieu River from Buckler’s Hard sits Exbury Gardens, the extraordinary estate of the de Rothschild family and a regular haunt of the late Queen Elizabeth. A little further on is Lepe Beach and Country Park, and beyond that, Calshot — a small castle, a beach beloved by windsurfers, and a massive sports centre in a converted aircraft hangar with a velodrome, rock climbing wall, and indoor ski slope.
🦌 The Wildlife Is Basically Running the Place
Here’s something no safari park can offer: the whole of the New Forest is one giant wildlife park, and nobody put up the fences.
Cross a cattle grid onto the Beaulieu Estate and you’re sharing the road with New Forest ponies, donkeys, cows, pigs, pheasants, Shetland ponies, Muntjac deer (tiny, dog-sized, and absolutely adorable), and all manner of wildlife that has absolutely no interest in your schedule.
The older ponies have perfected the art of standing in the middle of the road and staring you down while the rest of the herd crosses safely. The deer sprint across and hope for the best. The pigs just assume you’d know better.
Drive slowly. Enjoy it. This is their turf.
🏘️ So… Is It the Nicest Village in England?
We’re biased, obviously. But when Condé Nast, The Daily Telegraph, New Forest Living, TripAdvisor, and a public poll all point to the same Hampshire village with its honey stone cottages, river walks, wild ponies, 800 years of history, and a Rod Stewart connection — it’s hard to argue otherwise.
Beaulieu isn’t just pretty. It’s alive. It has stories. It has character. And it has the best high street donkeys in the country.
